On paper, this customer had one of the more robust home networks Rogue Support sees come through. A UDM SE anchoring the network, a USW Pro Max 24, a USW Pro XG 10 POE, a USW Enterprise 8 POE, and three Flex Minis rounding out the switching layer. For wireless coverage across a 2,500 square foot two-story house with a basement, the access point lineup included a U7 Pro Max, two U7 Pro XGS units, and two U6 Pros. This is not a starter kit. And yet, the Wi-Fi was making life miserable.

The Problem

The trouble was oddly specific. It wasn't the whole network struggling, it was mostly Apple devices: iPhones (16 Pro Max, 12, and 14), Apple TV 4Ks, and MacBook Airs on both M1 and M4 chips. These devices were dropping connections, struggling to get online, or just running painfully slow, even though the customer's underlying internet connection was a 2Gbps fiber line with symmetrical upload and download. The customer suspected a recent firmware update for the U7 and E7 lines might be connected to the issue, and had already spent real time troubleshooting on their own, including toggling transmit power between auto, medium, and low, and disabling the MLO (Multi-Link Operation) feature on the 5/6GHz SSID. Despite all that hands-on effort, the inconsistency remained, and it was mostly hitting Apple hardware specifically.
