Complete Synology to UniFi Migration — 2.5 Hours

When your ISP's tech accidentally becomes your network troubleshooter, it might be time for a bigger fix. That's exactly what happened to one homeowner running a Synology SRM 2600 router paired with a 2200 mesh point, whose story is a great example of how one small change can expose a much bigger problem, and how the right remote networking help can turn a mess into a clean, modern setup.

The Problem

It started with slow speeds. The customer was seeing roughly 90 Mbps on a connection that should have delivered around 300. After days of frustration, they called Xfinity, and a technician showed up and spent three hours on site. His fix: swap out the modem for one of Xfinity's own units. Speeds immediately jumped to the full 300 Mbps.

But the fix created a new problem. With the Xfinity router handling things, the network was now issuing IP addresses in the 10.0.x.x range, instead of the 192.168.1.x range the Synology SRM had always used. When the customer turned off the Xfinity router's Wi-Fi and routing functions and let the Synology take back over as the primary router, speeds dropped right back down to 90 Mbps, even over a direct Ethernet connection.

That kind of inconsistency is a classic sign of a deeper configuration issue, not just a bad modem. On top of that, the customer's network itself had grown into a bit of a patchwork. Trusted devices like phones, tablets, computers, and a NAS were mixed in the same 192.168.1.x network as a pile of IoT gadgets, smart lights, thermostats, plugs, and switches. A separate guest network (192.168.2.x) existed too, but it wasn't being used consistently, some IoT devices were on it, some weren't. There was no segmentation, no real structure, and no way to isolate a compromised smart device from the rest of the home.

The customer had already taken a big step toward fixing this by purchasing a Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra, with plans to add a Unifi switch and access points. The goal was ambitious but smart: retire the Synology gear entirely, move to an all-Unifi ecosystem, and build out three separate networks, one for trusted devices, one for IoT, and one dedicated to IP cameras (a mix of one wired and four wireless units), each isolated using VLANs.

The Approach

This is where Matt, one of Rogue Support's vetted networking technicians, stepped in. Rebuilding a home network from the ground up, especially one moving to a new hardware ecosystem, takes more than just plugging in boxes. It requires a real plan for IP addressing, VLAN tagging, firewall rules between segments, and Wi-Fi configuration that ties it all together cleanly.

Working remotely, Matt guided the customer through physically setting up the new Unifi hardware, the Cloud Gateway Ultra, a Unifi switch, and an AP6 Pro access point. Unifi adoption isn't always plug-and-play, and this session was no exception. The switch refused to be adopted into the Unifi controller not once but twice. Rather than getting stuck, Matt had the customer SSH directly into the switch to reset and reconfigure it manually, getting past the snag and back on track.

The Solution

With the hardware finally talking to each other properly, Matt moved into the real heart of the project: network segmentation. He helped configure three distinct VLANs, one for trusted devices like computers, phones, tablets, and the NAS, one dedicated purely to IoT devices like smart plugs, switches, and thermostats, and a third isolated network just for the camera system, keeping the wired and wireless cameras separate from everything else.

Each VLAN was set up with its own subnet and firewall rules, so IoT devices and cameras couldn't freely communicate with trusted devices or each other, a meaningful security upgrade from the old flat network setup. Matt also configured the AP6 Pro to broadcast the appropriate SSIDs mapped to their respective VLANs, so the customer's devices would land on the correct network automatically based on which Wi-Fi network they joined.

Beyond the VLAN work, Matt walked the customer through the Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra's interface itself, since this was their first time working with Unifi gear. He explained how the controller dashboard worked, how to monitor connected clients, and how to make future changes without breaking the segmentation they'd just built.

The Outcome

By the end of the 2.5-hour remote session, the customer had a fully modernized network: Synology gear retired, Unifi hardware fully adopted and configured, and three cleanly separated VLANs for trusted devices, IoT, and cameras. Just as importantly, the original speed mystery was resolved as part of moving to the new setup, since the new gateway handled the ISP connection without the routing conflicts that plagued the old Synology-to-Xfinity handoff.
